Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute (KPWHRI) is accepting applications for research positions at the Associate Investigator level (equivalent to Associate Professor appointment at an academic university). We welcome applications from all well-qualified candidates who have a proven track record of sustained extramural research funding and scholarly productivity in Health Services Research, Behavioral Science, Health Policy, Epidemiology or other health science disciplines well-aligned with our mission and environment. Essential Responsibilities:
- Build and maintain an independent, programmatic research portfolio as a Principal Investigator (PI).
- Also includes planning, initiating and conducting scientific research and evaluation studies; securing extramural funding; and collaborating with others as a co-investigator while continuing to build a sustained independent research program as a PI or Multiple PI on extramural grants and contracts.
- Provide leadership to research team, whether local or at other research sites.
- This includes clearly communicating with team members and other staff to implement project activities; being knowledgeable about and compliant with applicable organizational, federal and other regulatory practices and policies; serving as a content expert when serving as a collaborator; and effectively leading projects/teams when acting as PI.
- Analyze, interpret, and disseminate research findings to KPWHRI, KFHPW, and the broader scientific community through publications, presentations at scientific meetings, and other appropriate forums.
- Increasingly serve as lead presenter/author, maintaining a national reputation for one's scientific content expertise.
- Meets regularly with scientific mentoring team to advance knowledge and skills and provides mentoring to staff and junior scientists at KPWHRI.
- Participates in service at KPWHRI (e.g., serving on committees, mentoring), in the local scientific community, and on a national level (e.g., serving on committees of professional societies, serving on study sections for peer review, etc.).
- Maintain a national reputation as a leader in one's area of expertise.
- Participate in scientific planning and activities to support the growth and success of KPWHRI.
- Minimum two (2) years of graduate-level training in research design and methods.
- Minimum four (4) years of experience as an Assistant Investigator or equivalent position (e.g., Assistant Professor).
- One (1) major, extramural grant or contract or three (3) mid-sized grants or contracts in a programmatic area of research as a Principal Investigator.
- Fifteen (15) peer-reviewed scientific publication with at least seven (7) as first author, including published and in-press manuscripts.
- Minimum three (3) years of experience mentoring junior colleagues (e.g., students, faculty, postdoctoral fellows, or research staff) as a primary or secondary mentor.

- Familiarity with appropriate external funding sources and regulatory requirements for individuals field of research.
- Successful establishment of a coherent, independent body of research as evidence by being Principal investigator (PI) on one or more major, extramural grant (e.g., NIH R01 or equivalent) or contract, or PI on a several mid-sized grants and contracts in a programmatic area of research (e.g., NIH R21, R03).
- Evidence of a national reputation for ones scientific program, as demonstrated by a combination of: publication in moderate/high impact scientific journals, national level service (e.g., scientific peer reviewer, service to professional societies), invited talks as lead presenter at national scientific conferences, and the peer review of senior scientists.
- Content expertise in ones scientific field, including sophisticated knowledge of research design and methods.
- Service contributions as an Assistant-level Investigator in the local research community and at the national level.
- Local service includes, but is not limited to, activities such as serving on internal administrative committees, faculty search committees, student selection committees, student thesis or dissertation committees, or teaching.
- National service includes, but is not limited to, activities such as acting as a peer reviewer for journals and grant funding agencies or serving on high-profile committees and advisory boards with professional organizations and/or external research funding agencies.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills, organizational skills, emotional intelligence, and ability to collaborate with a diverse group of colleagues.
- Ability to effectively manage a programmatic body of research.
- This includes the ability to successfully lead multi-disciplinary research teams, build consensus and cohesion within teams, meet project milestones, manage project budgets, execute on deliverables, and remain compliant with applicable regulations.
- Ability to embody KPWHRI organizational values including, but not limited to: integrity, service, respect, courage, learning, justice, and joy.
- Experience serving on one or more investigators mentoring committees as an assistant level scientist.
- Significant service contributions to Kaiser Permanente (KPWHRI, KPWA, KP School of Medicine, and/or WPMG).
