Department Description:
The Kaiser Permanente Southern California (KPSC) Permanente Medical Group (SCPMG) Department of Research & Evaluation (R&E) conducts research involving large, diverse populations, providing timely evidence to decision-makers and the public. Our research teams possess extensive expertise in population-based cardiovascular disease research and pharmacoepidemiology studies. We undertake a broad spectrum of projects, including large, multisite cardiovascular epidemiologic studies focused on prevention, incidence, treatment, medication adherence, comparative effectiveness/safety, health resource utilization, and outcomes research. The overarching goal of our studies is to leverage our substantial membership and extensive data to generate findings that improve care and advance scientific knowledge about cardiovascular outcomes. We collaborate with partners from government, industry, academia, and other healthcare systems to achieve these objectives.
Intern Project(s):
Cardiovascular Epidemiologic Studies: Large, multisite studies focused on prevention, incidence, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
Medication Adherence Projects: Investigations into adherence to prescribed medications and strategies to improve compliance.
Comparative Effectiveness/Safety Studies: Research comparing the effectiveness and safety of different treatments and interventions.
Health Resource Utilization Studies: Analysis of the utilization of healthcare resources and its impact on patient outcomes.
Outcomes Research: Studies aimed at understanding the long-term outcomes of various cardiovascular treatments and interventions.
Pharmacoepidemiology Projects: Research on the use and effects of medications in large populations.

Research Methodology: Strong understanding of epidemiologic and pharmacoepidemiologic research methods.
Statistical Analysis: Proficiency in statistical analysis and software tools (e.g., SAS, R, Stata) to analyze large datasets.
Data Management: Skills in managing and interpreting large datasets, including data cleaning and data integration.
Project Management: Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, including coordinating with various stakeholders.
Collaboration: Strong ability to work collaboratively with partners from government, industry, academia, and other healthcare systems.
Writing and Communication: Excellent writing and communication skills for preparing reports, publications, and presentations.
Critical Thinking: Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to interpret study results and draw meaningful conclusions.
Current Ph.D. Student: Enrolled in a Ph.D. program in Health and Biomedical Informatics.
Relevant Coursework: Completed coursework in Machine Learning, Cardiology Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Deep Learning.
Research Experience: Experience with research related to electronic medical records and cardiovascular disease epidemiology.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in R, Python, SQL, and Tableau.
Publications and Presentations: Multiple first-author publications in peer-reviewed journals and several conference presentations.
Job Summary:
This position provides analytical support to a project or department. Under the guidance of a Project Manager/ Director, responsible for collecting and researching data, performing analysis, providing recommendations and presenting results.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Responsible for contributing high level analytical support to a project or department requiring application of knowledge in marketing, information management, finance, management, economics or statistics.
- This position contributes to a full range of project components.
- Assigned to at least one project and expected to produce results and report out as a member of a project team.
- Organizes assigned project tasks, identifies and structures information collection activities, and sets timelines for completion of required tasks as directed.
- Develops tools to identify and to document best practices.
- Prepares various excel, word or PowerPoint reports, and works with access database software (or similar tool) to develop data extracts and management information reports.
- May be asked to produce graphic information using excel or PowerPoint or similar software.
- Contributes to development of management information and analysis conducted, provides recommendations and assists with preparation of formal presentations to communicate results to various management levels. Identifies alternative solutions to project issues.
- Contributes to development project plans to ensure timely deliverables and successful completion of project and demonstrates an understanding of various business intersections.
- Assists with identification and development of training information.
