2025 Summer Internship Program
Location:
This role is scheduled to be 100% remote. While remote, finalists MUST reside in one of the following states to be eligible for employment with Kaiser Permanente: CA, OR, WA, HI, CO, GA, MD, VA, CT, DC, or IL.
Department Description:
The KPSOM HSS department mission includes: 1) the pursuit of a broad scholarship agenda that will improve health, health care, and health equity through systems transformation and redesign; and 2) delivery of an innovative foundational curriculum in four domains: community and population health, health care and social systems, quality and safety, and research methods to inform evidence-based clinical practice.
Intern Project(s):
The intern will have the opportunity to engage with several analytics projects to address health related research questions. For these projects, the intern will contribute to Big Data management– including data wrangling, building meaningful data summaries and graphical representations, and statistical inference via probabilistic and causal models. There will also be an opportunity to work on large data repositories to address public health research questions. Overall, projects will focus on: health equity, prenatal maternal stress, sleep disorders, premature birth, mediation, data mining, statistical modeling, and machine learning.
Target Majors:
Math, Statistics
Target Skills:
Familiarity with Bayesian statistics and statistical modeling, including generalized linear mixed effect models, structural equation models, mediation analysis, and causal inference. Familiarity with machine learning, specifically deep neural networks and other classification techniques, including random forest. Advanced programming skills with R. Prior experience with public health analytics, including experience with large data repositories, interest in performing statistical research related to health equity, and exploring the association between maternal stress and sleep disorders across demographic and socioeconomic groups.

- Aptitude to perform data and process analytics and formulating solutions.
- Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
- 3.0 GPA or above
- Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills
- Proven ability to build effective working relationships as well as strong interpersonal skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to learn quickly and experience producing high quality work in short periods of time.
