Job Summary:

The Vice President of Thought Leadership and Industry Engagement is a business, strategy and communications leader reporting to the Senior Vice President, Chief Communications Officer. This position directly supports Kaiser Permanente enterprise strategies by identifying strategic opportunities to inform and advance KP-s enterprise strategy and overseeing internal and external communications for those strategies while expanding thought leadership and industry engagement focused on advancing value-based care. The position includes responsibility for proactively identifying and integrating communications across the enterprise strategy and ensures alignment with Kaiser Permanente-s mission, vision, values, brand and reputation. This executive position is both a strategist and problem solver, providing counsel on and managing complicated, sensitive and rapidly changing internal and external factors to deliver strategies and tactics on a wide range of topics that greatly affect Kaiser Permanente brand and reputation as a health care organization and enterprise. The position is highly visible internally and externally. This individual works directly and closely with the highest levels of senior management, and partners across every major part of the enterprise, to provide counsel and ensure the successful completion of strategies and tactics in support of Kaiser Permanente-s enterprise strategy. The Vice President directly oversees senior directors and directors in key areas of strategic focus. These professionals are deployed in both an expert capacity for creating/reviewing communications strategy, including content and messaging and support across the KP enterprise (e.g. Integrated Care and Coverage, Risant Health, etc.) and as strategic advisors on areas of brand benefit and reputational risk. In addition, the Vice President oversees operations as well as content and channel strategies for KP International and the Garfield Innovation Center, which serve as key venues for thought leadership, industry differentiation, and industry engagement. The Vice President builds connections across entities and functions, ensuring that core strategies are receiving appropriate service levels and strategic support while shaping and promoting Kaiser Permanente-s brand and reputation. This position serves as a member of the enterprise communications leadership team and also serves as a back up to the Chief Communications Officer on matters of strategic significance.


Essential Responsibilities:

  • The Vice President has a significant leadership role among Enterprise and Regional leaders. The incumbent identifies and leverages best practices from within and outside of the organization, introduces new communications, thought leadership and industry engagement strategies for consideration to further promote Kaiser Permanente-s brand and reputation, both internally as well as externally. 
  • This position is a key business partner and strategist that works alongside strategy and business development leaders to inform and advance Kaiser Permanente-s enterprise strategy, gathering and applying insights from internal and external sources to identify new opportunities, anticipate risks, strengthen strategic plans, and guide execution.
  • This position oversees the development of strategies, messages, and tactics that effectively communicate Kaiser Permanente-s position on any number of complex topics, issues, and initiatives that support long-term business strategies. 
  • This position is accountable for development of the new Garfield Innovation Center, a venue and learning center focused on showcasing Kaiser Permanente innovation and the advancement of value-based care. Accountabilities include developing its multi-year business case to secure funding, selecting and working with building and experience designers, and delivering compelling brand experiences for internal and external audiences.
  • This position oversees a small team focused on leadership communications strategy and execution as a key component of thought leadership and industry engagement, ensuring strategic alignment and prioritization with organization-s strategies.
  • This position has executive oversight of Kaiser Permanente International, a not-for-profit educational subsidiary of Kaiser Permanente that creates educational experiences that empower health care leaders worldwide to improve health care and health care innovation in their countries by sharing Kaiser Permanente-s integrated health care model, best practices, and principles for success.
  • The Vice President will lead through complicated issues across a number of highly sensitive topics, conflicting external / internal interests, internal complexities and organizational realities, media sensitivities, and political dynamics to help guide Kaiser Permanente-s messaging and communications strategies on a wide variety of topics. 
  • This position will lead (directly and indirectly) teams of national and regional communications leaders, subject-matter experts and practitioners whose mission is to help create and manage appropriate communications materials, identify opportunities to promote Kaiser Permanente-s messages, and anticipate challenges and competition from other stakeholders. When team members do not report directly to this position, leadership must be accomplished through influence.
  • This position will work closely with the National Executive Team, Regional Presidents and other senior leaders to understand and be conversant with the business issues underlying the communications strategies that are being created. S/he must appropriately engage and leverage leaders to be effective representatives of our message and position.
Basic Qualifications:
Experience

  • Minimum fifteen (15) years of experience in executive, corporate and employee communications, public/media relations for a large, complex organization, at a senior level.
  • Minimum ten (10) years in progressively responsible leadership roles, ideally related to a health care setting and not-for-profit sector. 
  • Minimum ten (10) years experience in executive presentation and consultation.
  • Minimum eight (8) years experience working in partnership with strategy and or business development leaders to identify new opportunities, anticipate risks, and strengthen strategic plans. 
Education

  • Bachelors- degree in journalism, public relations, communications, business, political science or related field required.
License, Certification, Registration

Additional Requirements:

  • Demonstrated track record working with strategy and/or business development leaders to produce strategic communications deliverables with proven results.
  • Experience managing large scale organizational change within large complex companies.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in interpersonal and communications skills, including excellent customer focus skills in prior roles and career accomplishments.
  • Excellent strategic financial management and track record of managing large budgets with proven fiscal responsibility.
  • Proven solutions and operational leader who leads by example through strong personal accountability, dedication, decisiveness, courage and conviction to the goals and objectives of Enterprise Strategy & Business Development, Communications and Kaiser Permanente overall.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10+ years thought leadership experience, delivering brand experiences in unique venues, and/or convening industry leaders for the purpose of advancing a common purpose preferred.
  • Graduate degree highly desirable.
