The Optical Laboratory Apprentice is one engaged in learning one or all of the duties of a laboratory benchperson, surface grinder, prescription stock clerk or other journeyperson level laboratory position, and as such is working under the direct supervision of a journeyperson or working forperson.
Essential Responsibilities:
- A Benchperson is one engaged in one or all of the following operations in connection with glass or plastic spectacle lenses:
- Lineup
- Drilling
- Machine or hand edging
- Insertingor mounting lenses
- Dyeing and soldering
- Inspecting completed work
- Inspects glasses for the purposes of ascertaining whether the glasses or parts thereof upon completion conform to established mechanical and prescription standards.
- A surface grinder is one engaged in one or all of the following operations in connection with glass or plastic spectacle lenses:
- layout
- Generator operating
- Hand or mechanical blocking
- Roughing
- Fining
- Fining cylinger
- Polishing cylinder
- Spheres
- A prescription stock clerk in one engaged in the following:
- Supplies prescription lenses and frames including transposition, base curve, and blank size selection for the purposes of manufacturing.
- Receive and record, on a daily basis, missing information on prescriptions.
- Order frames and lenses from prescription order and back-up stock. Receive and verify incoming stock orders. Modiy lens cutouts.
- Maintain and update frames and lenses information in the system. Update frame prices.
- Maintain inventory of miscellaneous optical supplies. Perform cycle count of frames and lenses.
- Input and generate work ticket from computer. Print frame information cards on new frame product release. Print bar code label for all frames supplied daily.
- Communicate backorder issues with vendor and obtain shipping date.
- Interact daily with all Optical Branch Offices regading frames and lens status.
- Performs other related duties as necessary.
- Supervisory responsibilities: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

- High School Diploma or General Education Equivalent (GED) required.

- Must be able to pass standard color blindness test.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence.
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
- Must be willing to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment.
- Also refer to Position Specifications outlined in the appropriate collective bargaining agreement.
- Prior optical benchroom experience, surface grinding experience, prescription stock clerk experience preferred.
