Description:
Job Summary:

Provide high quality health care to Kaiser Permanente members in a cost-effective manner and in accordance with accepted professional practice standards.



Essential Responsibilities:


  • Must have flexibility to provide follow up care for oncology patients in both acute and ambulatory patient settings.

  • Assess and diagnose oncology patients, and formulate and implement treatment plans, addressing complex medical conditions.

  • Admit and discharge inpatients, write all needed orders and complete discharge summary within electronic health record during hospital rotation. 

  • Round on inpatient oncology patients Monday through Friday, although may share weekend rounding in the future.

  • Document follow-up notes, monitor chemotherapy infusion, identify and treat adverse reactions and effects of therapy. 

  • Provide pre and post procedure education, including comprehensive discussions of complex diagnostic and treatment options.

  • Perform exams and provide f/u care; order diagnostic studies and medications, schedule procedures, and provide follow-up.

  • Flexibility for independently seeing outpatients in clinic and returns (complete management) for specific oncology diseases and/or conditions to be determined by department chief.

  • Requires flexibility for urgent, unscheduled backup to oncologists for both inpatients and outpatients.

  • May require flexibility to drive from one site to another during the course of a business day.

  • Independently perform bone marrow aspirations, and other procedures as determined.

  • Performs other duties as requested.

  • The above care must be documented in writing in patients permanent medical record in accordance with accepted medical/legal standards.

  • All medical care must be provided in accordance with accepted practice standards, hospital/clinic protocols (including supervision by a physician) and State licensing.

Basic Qualifications:

Experience


  • Minimum three (3) years of experience as an NP OR new graduate NP with at least six (6) months of oncology experience within the last three (3) years.


Education


  • Graduate of approved A.N.A. Nurse Practitioner program or equivalent requirements to meet State licensure.


License, Certification, Registration


  • This job requires credentials from multiple states. Credentials from the primary work state are required before hire. Additional Credentials from the secondary work state(s) are required post hire.



  • Registered Nurse License (Washington) within 6 months of hire OR Compact License: Registered Nurse within 6 months of hire



  • Nurse Practitioner License (Oregon) within 6 months of hire



  • Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner License (Washington) within 6 months of hire



  • Registered Nurse License (Oregon) within 6 months of hire



  • Drug Enforcement Administration Registration



  • National Provider Identifier required at hire



Additional Requirements:


  • Thorough and working knowledge of Oncology diseases and conditions and their treatment.

  • Thorough and working knowledge of chemotherapy, with particular emphasis on bone marrow aspiration.

  • Working knowledge of state health care laws, licensing board regulations and controlled substance regulations.

  • Important to know limitations and when to refer patients to the Oncologist.

  • Ability to assess, diagnose and plan effective treatment for oncology diseases and conditions.

  • Excellent procedure skills, especially with bone marrow aspiration.

  • Ability to use appropriate procedural/testing equipment, to see large volume of patients, and to interface with large physician and support staff.

  • Recognition of normal and abnormal anatomy.

  • Writing orders.

  • Protocols for blood transfusions, fluid balance, oral intake, bowel and urinary care, IV narcotic and other pain management.

  • Post-op protocols for prophylaxis for DVT, mobilization, therapy.

  • Knowledge of UM requirements for hospitals.

  • Understanding of capabilities of ancillary and support services both IP and OP.

  • Knowledge of documentation and coding requirements for both IP and OP.



Preferred Qualifications:


  • Minimum five (5) years of clinical experience in Oncology setting.

  • Minimum five (5) years as Oncology N.P.

  • Minimum five (5) years of acute care inpatient experience, with emphasis on Oncology procedures.
