Department Description:


The Pharmacy Operations Informatics department at Kaiser Permanente plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth functioning of pharmacy services and enhancing patient care through the use of technology and informatics. Some key functions of the department include:
1.    Operational Oversight: The department oversees operational activities across the pharmacy landscape, ensuring consistency and best practices. This includes managing workflow, policy compliance, and system improvements.
2.    Patient Care Strategies: The department is responsible for creating and implementing patient care strategies. This involves using analytics and informatics to track prescription use data, developing best practices and guidelines, and championing a patient-focused mindset.
3.    Pharmacotherapy Safety: The department leads interdisciplinary teams to implement and evaluate pharmacotherapy safety practices and initiatives. This ensures that safety standards are maintained across all pharmacy operations.
4.    Strategic Planning: The department is involved in long-term strategic planning to set the direction for future patient care strategies. This includes monitoring and tracking the use of analytics and informatics to assess prescription use data and identify challenges and needed changes.
5.    Support for Frontline Operations: The department supports frontline operations by participating in regional and national pharmacy and therapeutics committees. This helps in advocating for and supporting the needs of frontline pharmacy staff.
6.    Service, Affordability, and Quality: The department contributes to service, affordability, people, quality of care, and regulatory pharmacy goals. This involves driving efforts to create, design, and implement strategic plans to support improvements in these areas.
The department's work is essential in ensuring that pharmacy operations are efficient, compliant, and capable of providing high-quality care to patients. 



Intern Project(s):


The primary projects the informatics intern include 1) analysis of refill protocol data and 2) create, standardize, and clean up procedures for common tasks.
A refill protocol is a set of guidelines and procedures used to manage and approve medication refill requests efficiently and safely. At Kaiser Permanente, the refill protocol involves several key steps and criteria to ensure that patients receive their medications in a timely manner while maintaining safety and compliance standards.  The data analysis will include which components of the protocol criteria are not passing and determining recommendations for improvement in protocols based on the analysis.
The creation/standardization of common tasks will involve discussion and analysis to determine the most effective methods to select, as well as using MS Word and Excel and working with an informatics pharmacist in the electronic medical record to develop procedure documents.

Job Summary:

This position provides analytical support to a project or department. Under the guidance of a Project Manager/ Director, responsible for collecting and researching data, performing analysis, providing recommendations and presenting results.



Essential Responsibilities:


  • Responsible for contributing high level analytical support to a project or department requiring application of knowledge in marketing, information management, finance, management, economics or statistics. This position contributes to a full range of project components.

  • Assigned to at least one project and expected to produce results and report out as a member of a project team. Organizes assigned project tasks, identifies and structures information collection activities, and sets time lines for completion of required tasks as directed.

  • Develops tools to identify and to document best practices. Prepares various excel, word or PowerPoint reports, and works with access database software (or similar tool) to develop data extracts and management information reports. May be asked to produce graphic information using excel or PowerPoint or similar software.

  • Contributes to development of management information and analysis conducted, provides recommendations and assists with preparation of formal presentations to communicate results to various management levels. Identifies alternative solutions to project issues. Contributes to development project plans to ensure timely deliverables and successful completion of project and demonstrates an understanding of various business intersections. Assists with identification and development of training information.

  • Kaiser Permanente conducts compensation reviews of positions on a routine basis. Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of SQL or SAS highly desirable.
