Job Summary:

Performs procedures including phlebotomy, specimen collection, processing, customer service, and quality assurance and waived and/or limited moderate complex laboratory testing. Performs all duties in compliance with Kaiser Permanentes Code of Conduct, Principles of Responsibility, policies and procedures as well as by adhering to federal, state and local laws and regulations, accreditation and licenser requirements. Performs all responsibilities and duties under the technical guidance of the Laboratory Supervisor/Manager or designee.



Essential Responsibilities:


  • Task Related Duties: Greets and accurately identifies members adhering to the KP member experience standards. Collects blood samples from all patient/member populations members using age-appropriate venipuncture or capillary puncture and following KP policies. Instructs patients regarding the collection and packaging of other specimens such as urine, semen, feces and timed collections. Assesses specimen integrity and prepares, packages and arranges for transport of specimens in accordance with KPMAS laboratory procedures and DOT regulations. Arranges for special transport when necessary. Processes specimens to include racking, creating work lists and loading instruments. Collect and pick up specimens from clinical departments and transport stat specimens to stat lab testing area following designated workflows and appropriate KP policies. Disposes of biological waste, needles, and related hazardous materials according to laboratory safety and infection control practices, federal, state and local laws and regulations. Responds to internal and external inquiries via phone, email or text to ensure resolution and customer satisfaction. Provides orientation and practical training of new hires and students. Follows defined laboratory procedures and maintains awareness of changes to procedures. Maintain a clean, adequately stocked and safe work environment. Assists in loading and unloading of specimens from instruments in the lab. At MOB/HUB CENTERS: Perform waived and/or limited moderately complex laboratory testing in accordance with standards set forth in the approved Laboratory Laboratory Test Menu and Procedures Manual.  Reports and maintains records of patient results according to protocol.  (Waived and moderately complex are recognized laboratory test complexity classifications as defined in CLIA 88 federal regulations). At MOB/HUB CENTERS: Adheres to quality control and quality assurance procedures with appropriate and accurate documentation. Follows laboratorys established corrective action procedures. Performs proficiency testing and reports results according to protocol. Documents outliers and actions taken. Submits all documentation for supervisory review in a timely manner. At MOB/HUB CENTERS: Follows instrument/equipment maintenance procedures, troubleshooting procedures and maintains records of actions. Refers major problems to the supervisor or designee.

  • Quality Related Duties: Performs administrative duties such as preparation and distribution of reports, and pending log resolution. Adhere to laboratory quality service standards including access, wait times and assurance of member satisfaction. Monitors waiting room and turnaround times, identifies unexpected or unreasonable delays, unusual situations and brings these to the attention of the supervisor, manager or designee. Completes all assigned and required trainings in timely manner. Adheres to licensing and certificate maintenance requirements including annual CEUs and KP assigned CEUs.

  • Customer Service Related Duties: Communicates specimen inquiries, problem and investigations to appropriate medical, clinical and technical staff in a timely manner according to established laboratory procedures. Documents member, provider and customer compliments, concerns or complaints. Resolves when able or escalates to manager, supervisor or designee. Provide assistance to peers, clinical staff and providers.Creates a professional, collaborative and positive work environment.

  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

11:30 PM to 12 AM, Monday to Friday with alternating weekend rotations



Basic Qualifications:

Experience


  • Minimum one (1) year of experience working in a clinical environment including laboratory testing to include moderate complexity testing, phlebotomy, and specimen processing OR successful completion of a MLA Clinical Rotation in a Kaiser Permanente Laboratory (with documented 120 unassisted successful venipuncture to include 10 or more pediatric collections.)


Education


  • Graduation from an accredited or Kaiser approved medical lab assistant program that includes phlebotomy training.

  • Proper documentation for education required (i.e. copy of diploma or international equivalency report). Individuals with foreign diplomas must provide an international equivalency report.

  • High School Diploma OR General Education Development (GED) required.


License, Certification, Registration


  • Phlebotomy Technologist Certificate within 12 months of hire OR Phlebotomy Technician Certificate within 12 months of hire OR Registered Phlebotomy Technician (AMT) within 12 months of hire OR Certified Phlebotomy Technician (ASPT) within 12 months of hire



  • Basic Life Support within 6 months of hire


Additional Requirements:


  • Must maintain certifications current and complete annual CEUs to meet CLIA regulations and/or licensing.

  • Must pass Kaiser Permanente MLA and phlebotomy written exams with 80% as minimum passing score for each exam.

  • Must pass Pre-Hire Skills and Knowledge test of basic computer skills.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Medical Lab Assistant Certification preferred.

  • Pediatric and neonatal phlebotomy experience.
