Description:
Job Summary:

Responsible for oversight and development of medical physics program in general x-ray, mammography, CT, MRI, nuclear medicine, PET, and ultrasound for the No. Calif. KP Region. As part of the duties the person will perform surveys in these modalities together with involvement with site shielding design requirements. Continued focus on patients, staff, physicians, and general environmental radiation safety. All Federal, State and local regulations must be met.

Essential Responsibilities:


  • Provides surveys, reports and consultation related to radiation safety for applicable facilities and/or patients that meet the KP organizations standards and regulatory compliance in a timely manner. Communicates to staff, physicians, and patients in a manner that is precise, understandable, timely, constructive, proactive, and demonstrates excellent communication and listening skills. Reviews medical physics reports from service engineers, non-KP physicists, and State surveyors for compliance and needed corrections. Provide focused instruction in medical radiation physics to diagnostic imaging technologists and equipment service engineers for safety and compliance with regulatory standards.

  • Develops and implements quality assurance and evaluation programs for applicable diagnostic imaging equipment that insure high quality images and radiation treatments and that meet regulatory requirements. Oversees the Biomedical Engineerings personal radiation monitoring program. Assignment to participate on Regional and/or National KP technology selection teams. Maintains up-to-date technical knowledge of new and developing technologies and regulatory issues to support clinical and administrative decision-makers.
Basic Qualifications:
Experience


  • Minimum two (2) years of postgraduate degree experience in the applicable medical physics subspecialty.

Education

  • Masters degree, OR Ph.D. in medical physics or a related field.
  • Degree requirements waived if candidate meets certification requirements.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
License, Certification, Registration
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging Physics Certification from American Board of Radiology OR Medical Health Physics Certification OR Certification in Medical Physics from American Board of Radiology
Additional Requirements:

  • Experience in designing, implementing and monitoring quality assurance programs in the applicable medical physics subspecialty.
  • General knowledge of medical physics, medical radiation safety and pertinent regulations.
  • Good communication skills, demonstrated customer service skills and willingness to be part of a team.
  • General radiation safety policies and procedures development and oversight knowledge.
  • General working knowledge of computers and their applications in medical physics.
  • Applicable certification required in order to function as a Certified Medical Physicist in the State of California to perform general diagnostic imaging and nuclear medicine surveys.
  • Specific qualifications must have two of the following: (1) Experience and certification to perform MQSA compliance surveys of mammography systems; (2) General x-ray systems surveys; (3) nuclear medicine scintillation & non-imaging systems and general departmental surveys; (4) CT safety and performance surveys, (5) MRI system performance surveys.
  • Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Worked a minimum two (2) years in the State of California preferred.
  • ABR certified in all aspects of diagnostic imaging modalities with over six (6) years of working independently performing DI systems surveys I general radiology, mammography, and nuclear medicine preferred.
