Description:
Job Summary:

The Director of Professional Development and Education is responsible for the professional development, management, planning, implementation, evaluation, and improvement through outcome measures, innovation, program development, and consultative services for KFH or SCPMG nursing and non-nursing employee populations at all levels at more than one medical center and associated outlying facilities and for education/development services at the inpatient or out-patient facilities in an entire local Medical Center (i.e. Orange, San Diego). This position reports to the CNE or designee and collaborates with key stakeholders to drive quality outcomes through metrics and analytics.  This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating competency based curriculums for professional development of novice to expert nurses that encompasses regulatory standards, evidence-based practice, policies and procedures, and accountability. Responsibilities include one or more of the following functions/services: performance improvement consulting, CME/Academic Affairs, Member Health Education, Library Services, Cancer Registry and other assigned service(s)/program(s).



Essential Responsibilities:



    • Transformational Leadership


      • Advocates for organizational support of ongoing leadership development for all nurses with a focus on retention, mentoring, career trajectory, and succession planning.

      • Develops, directs, and conducts Professional Development and Education programs for all levels of nursing and non-nursing employee populations based on the vision, strategic business plan and operational goals.

      • Effectively utilizes adult learning methodology in delivery of Professional Education and Development programs.  

      • Provides leadership, coaching and consultative services to key stakeholders to analyze, diagnose, and create innovative solutions at the Medical Center through committee membership.

      • Works cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and makes decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.

      • Positively influences others to achieve results that are in the best interest of the organization.









        • Structural Empowerment


          • The Director of Professional Development is responsible to uphold and comply with Kaiser Permanentes Policies and Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities and applicable state, federal and local laws.

          • Promotes SCAL KPs vision, mission, and goals within the SCAL KP, nurse leaders and the community.  

          • The Director of Professional Development is responsible for the oversight and development of SCAL KPs educational offerings.

          • Coordinates the planning and delivery of educational offerings in collaboration with key stakeholders.

          • Appropriately accesses the resources within SCAL KP for consultation and support.

          • Develops and monitors operating and capital budgets for all education and associated functions.

          • Determines strategies to move the organization towards their goals, creates and implements action plans and evaluates the process and results












          • Exemplary Professional Practice


            • Maintains current knowledge of regulatory requirements and conforms to them.

            • Establishes and maintains excellent working relationships both internally and externally with key stakeholders to achieve the goals of the organization.

            • Coordinates clinical placement for all students.

            • Interacts with community agencies for the support and provision of education to maintain a competent health care work force.




                • Coordinates internal and external education resources for education programs.

                • New Knowledge, Innovation, and Improvements

                • Remains current with literature related to the nursing profession and leadership development.

                • Leads innovative technology and applies methodologies, simulation, and tools to professional development programs

                • Routinely shares professional knowledge with key stakeholders.  

                • Implements large scale change interventions of which training and development play a significant part within the Medical Center.

                • Develops new and unique ways to improve operations of the organization and to create new opportunities.

                • Develops, implements, and evaluates competency based curricula for professional development that incorporates regulatory standards, evidence-based practice, policies and procedures, and accountability.







              • Empirical Outcomes

              • Consistently evaluates the effectiveness of educational programs in partnership with Medical Center Leadership.

              • Participates in processes to measure effectiveness, efficiency, and service, and maintains documentation and reporting mechanisms.

              • Drives quality outcomes through metrics and analytics

              • Performs other duties as assigned.










#Leadership

Basic Qualifications:

Experience


  • Minimum eight (8) years of leadership experience in a health care setting or acute healthcare nursing experience, including a minimum of four (4) years of progressive management and supervisory experience.


Education


  • Masters Degree in education or a related field (nursing, health administration, business, public health or management)

  • Academic degree in nursing required (either Bachelors or Masters degree)


License, Certification, Registration


  • Registered Nurse License (California)



  • Basic Life Support


Additional Requirements:


  • Demonstrated knowledge of operations and healthcare management, Nurse Practice Act, TJC and other local, state, and federal regulations.

  • Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment

  • Demonstrated ability to utilize the principles, methodologies and practices of adult education, instructional design, evaluation and research.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills for program coordination/evaluation and working with groups.

  • Demonstrated ability to use a variety of presentation skills and education and facilitation techniques.

  • Computer literacy required.Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.
